HI MAURICIO, WE NEEED YOUR ADVISE!!!WE ARE RENOVATING THE ENSUITE BATH, AND WOULD LOVE TO USE TRAVERTINE ON THE FLOOR, WALLS AND ENCLOSED SHOWER, IN DIFFERENT SIZES/SHAPES.OUR CONTRACTOR AGREED IT WOULD BE A WONDERFUL CHOICE....BUT WE WERE TOLD BY A "CENTURA TILES" SALES REP, THAT THEY SOULD NOT BE USED AT ALL!THAT MAGAZINES AND SHOW ROOM USED IT BECAUSE IT LOOKS NICE. MAYBE ON THE ENTRANCE HALL OR SOME FLOOR OF THE HOUSE WILL BE OK....BUT NOT ON A BATHROOM...SHAMPOO...SOAP...EVEN MAKE UP DUST WILL DISCOLOR IT INMEDIATELY!!!ALSO IN THE SHOWER WE'LL HAVE WATER DAMAGE THROUGH THE WALLS IN NO TIME...THAT SEALING WON'T HELP AT ALL.AND THAT "ONLY CERAMIC OR PORCELAIN TILES ARE MADE FOR BATHROOMS". You're confused and, as  a consumer, you have the right to be.

However, I noticed that someone else is mighty confused! That salesman that told you not to use travertine in a wet environment!

Travertine is one of the most suitable stones for wet environments

Of course, to minimize the maintenance issues, you will want to have it either hone-finished or tumble-finished. Higly polished is not the best choice.

But if you choose the stone wisely and - more importantly - have it installed right, you will enjoy your travertine for many years to come!

The key is the installation. I've seen all too many shower stalls that needed ripping out because of faulty installations. But that does not apply to stone only; even ceamic tiles are not free of the same problems if the installation is faulty!
