vinegar etching spots

I have a brand new marble bathroom countertop that I cleaned with a diluted solution of vinegar and water. I did this about 2 or 3 times before I read a website saying vinegar will etch marble. The coutertop still looks great. It is shiny, but at an angle you can see small spots that look like the sponge left water marks. I am assuming the vinegar caused this. Is there anything I can do myself to fix this, or will I have to have it polished by a professional?

Dear Ann:

Consider yourself lucky! Your marble is probably on the dolomitic side and is more acid-resistant than calcareous marble.

At any rate, yes, it is reasonable to assume that the vinegar produced those few etch-marks. If they're as light as you describe them, a good quality Marble Repair Kit will enable you to do the repair yourself.

May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm? J

Ciao and good luck,
