grout color for marble floor

We are replacing our master bath flooring with dark marble. The marble is almost black with white veins and a touch of gold. Our existing cabinets are white as is the ceramic tile tub surround. For the grout, should we try to match the dark marble or use a lighter color?

Dear Laurie:

It is strictly a question of personal taste. Using grout substantially darker than the marble is always a big gamble, because the side of the marble tiles could absorb the die of the grout and get permanently and irreversibly stained; using grout lighter then the marble, however, presents no risk.

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – like it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable – which in the case of polished black marble is impossible) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about it from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic!
