Correct impregnator to use

Can you tell me if a granite by the name if Tropical Delicatus from Brazil should be sealed/impregnated? IF so, what would you recommend> Thanks! Tony

Dear Tony:

Tropical Delicatus is a stone classified as “exotic granite” (whatever that means… J ). The vast majority of these stones are naturally fractured and they typically go through some “heavy-duty” resining process to literally hold them together. The resining process dramatically alters the natural absorbency of any stone it's implemented on, to the point that many times it seals it permanently and totally. So, for starters, you have to find out if your stone can take any impregnator (a.k.a. sealer) in. Do this:

Spill some water in a couple of spots of your stone, let it dwell for 5 minutes or so, wipe it dry and observe if the areas under which the water has been sitting have become (temporarily) any darker than the rest. If so, then you will apply a good-quality impregnating sealer. If not, you won't.

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – like it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about it from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic!
