Rainforest Marble?

I am in the early stages of selecting a stone for my bathroom remodel and fell in love with a green "rainforest marble" that I would like to use in the bathroom surround along with another neutral colored stone that I haven't selected. I was planning on selecting a honed finish to avoid problems with etching. I read on your sight that this is actually a limestone and not a marble. If that is the case should I not use it in a tub surround? Also if I can use it, does it need to be sealed or require any special maitnence? Please tell me what I should know about this stone.

Dear Charlotte:

Especially if hone-finished Rainforest Green is a good stone for your project. Yes, it is technically limestone, but one of the “good guys”.

However, remember that even the best stone is just as good as the contractor who's going to install it!

As for the sealing it is indeed absorbent, but I consider the application of an impregnator (a.k.a. sealer) an option considering the environment where it is going to be installed.

Remember: The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about it from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic!
