I have a new house with Granite counters in the kitchen with travertine counters and tiel in the bathrooms. Do I need to seal these surfaces? I know they sealed the tile on the floor in the shower, but the counter in the bathrooms seem rough surfaced and the tiles seems smoother. What about The granite counters? Thanks, Todd

How would I know?... You don't say which granite or “granite” you have. How about if it's a “granite” that can't be technically sealed? And how about if it was made out of resined slab? And how about if the installer already sealed it?... There's only one way to find out:

Spill some water in a couple of spots of your stone, let it dwell for 5 minutes or so, wipe it dry and observe if the areas under which the water has been sitting have become (temporarily) any darker than the rest. If so, then you will apply a good-quality impregnating sealer like MB-4. If not, you won't. That applies to any other stone you have in your house.

That said, remember: The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about it from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic!
