using vinegar on granite

I understand that many of the black granites are non-porous. Therefore, I am would like to know why certain liquids like vinegar is discouraged, given that these granites will not absorb. Thank you !

Dear Franca :

The use of vinegar on natural stone is not advisable – ever. It has nothing to do with the absorbency of the stone, but with the high acidity of the vinegar. For instance, polished marble is not porous at all, yet it gets etched instantly, on contact, by any acid. It is the calcite in the stone that reacts chemically with acids even if it does not absorb them. Mercantile granites are typically acid-resistant, but that does not mean that they are acid-proof. There's no saying the long-term effects of systematically using a highly acidic cleaner like vinegar on any natural stone, even the most acid-resistant ones.
