enhancing travertine

I was reading about your MB-6 enhancer and could not find the information about when the stone should be enhanced. Could you please tell me: 1) How long I have to wait to enhance the stone after setting it? 2) can the stone be enhanced before grouting? 3) If the stone can be enhanced before grouting, do I use a different product on the grout to seal it or the same enhancer? 4) If the stone cannot be enhanced before grouting, how long after grouting do I wait before putting the enhancer on. Thanks.

Dear Joyce:

Before I answer your questions I have to start by saying that enhancing travertine may turn out to be tricky: some times the stone is not dense uniformly and when that happens you may get a blotchy enhancement. So, before you make any decision, you should try on a few spare tiles by rubbing them with baby oil to see if your stone will be able to get enhanced properly. (The bay oil will evaporate in a matter of a couple of days.)

Assuming that your travertine can be successfully enhanced, then the answers to your questions are:
  1. A couple of weeks.
  2. It is best not.
  3. Moot.
  4. Like I said before, a couple of weeks.

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about it from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic!
