Dear Kathryn:
Many people are sold into stones that don't belong and are further given the assurance that some useless (under the circumstances) “miracle-in-a-bottle” will solve all problems inherent to that particular stone for ever and ever. Of course nobody ever explains to the consumers that the “sealer” they will apply is not in fact a sealer the way the meaning of the word is generally perceived, but an impregnator instead.
Why?
Because the word impregnator means very little, has no “marketing magic” within, like the word sealer does, and they wouldn't sell even a fraction of the numbers of bottles of impregnator they sell.
Your limestone does not belong in a shower stall – end of the debate.
What you have are not stains, since a stain is always darker than the stained material, but they are surface damages instead.
Can they be repaired?
Yes, by hiring the very expensive services of a reputable stone restoration contractor.
Can they be prevented?
No.
And that is one more example why the world needs marblecleaning.org.
