Travertine Tile

we just had travertine installed in our home and i'm not sure if it must be sealled or not. Some research i've done is conflicting. they were purchassed at Home Depot (great sale) and the only info on the box is: Walnut Travertine Shade No. 3, product of Turkey. The home depot employees are helpless, and i'm clueless. can you recomend anything for sealing and/or maintenace??

Dear Joe:

I must assume that the travertine tiles are not polished, but with a hone-finish. (That's how they typically sell Turkish travertine tiles at the HD.)

The sealing of hone-finished travertine is optional. It does not offer any protection to the surface of the stone; it only helps to prevent imbedded staining, which in the case of travertine is a rare occurrence. If it were my own home, I would apply a good-quality impregnator like MB-4 only if the floor was in a kitchen.
