I've just bought a house with a painted soapstone fireplace. The previous owner said she stripped it down to the stone, but that it was green on one side and cream on the other. I would like to check this out for myself. What's the best way to get layers of paint off a beautiful soapstone fireplace. Thanks for your help. Claudia

 

Dear Claudia:

The good news is that soapstone is impervious to any chemical, and therefore any good-quality paint stripper should do the job. Just in cas e you might have any residue after the stripping, and/or you will discover some surface damage under the paint, you can easily fix everything with some sandpaper. When everything is done, treat the whole thing with mineral oil and… enjoy!!

It may not be attractive to some people, but soapstone is the very best material for a fireplace from a mechanic point of view!
