Raw Silk & Tan Brown

Hello, I just built a new house with natural stone counters in the kitchen. Specifically, Raw Silk on the island and Tan Brown on the perimeter counters. Do either or both of these stones require sealing? If so, which of your products would you recommend and how often? Thank you.

Dear Yusuf:

Do either or both of these stones require sealing?

I don't know. It much depends on whether or not the factory resined those slabs and if the installer applied an impregnator to your countertop.

Os it's up to you to find out. Do this:

Spill some water in a couple of spots of your stone, let it dwell for 5 minutes or so, wipe it dry and observe if the areas under which the water has been sitting have become (temporarily) any darker than the rest. If so, then you will apply a good-quality impregnating sealer like MB-4. If not, you won't.

It is amazing to me, however, noticing how most inquirers are so overly concerned with the sealing issue, while they don't even think about asking what to do and what to use on their stones on a daily basis, which – as it should be intuitive – is vastly more important than the sealing – if and when possible and/or advisable.
