In fact, if there were any solution to the problem, the wrong stone wouldn't be wrong, after all…
The best course of action (correction: the
only course of action) to sensibly solve the problem, this side of ripping out the whole thing and charge the specifier for that, is to have it professionally restored, and then, before starting using it again, have a sheet of glass custom cut to cover every single square inch of it. That is the only “sealer” that will ever work!
