slate

I purchased and am memorizing your article on how to shop for a granite countertop. Thanks! When I read through many of the questions on the site, I see that slate is not your preferred material for "anywhere but a roof". Does this advice hold for a backsplash that is nowhere near a cooktop, i.e. no grease? There would be splashes from the sink. I read your answer that there are many kinds of slate but no specifics on what the differences are and how to detect them.

Dear Carol:

Does this advice hold for a backsplash that is nowhere near a cooktop, i.e. no grease? There would be splashes from the sink.

It should be alight as long as you treat the stone with a good-quality stone color enhancer like MB-6.

I read your answer that there are many kinds of slate but no specifics on what the differences are and how to detect them.

Unfortunately, I could not figure out a simple test like my lemon-juice (and oil) to determine the suitability of the different types of slates available on the marketplace and counting. There's no easy way to tell, I'm sorry.

And that is one more reason why the world needs marblecleaning.org!

May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm?

Ciao and good luck,
