What kind of slab for shower stall

Hello, I am in the process of re-doing my master bath and want to understand what is the best stone for a shower stall. I don't like tiles because of the grout. We wipe down our shower area after each shower to keep the hard water deposit to minimum. Therefore, which stone will accomplish the ease of care. How do we keep the stone clean with regards to the glass? I know certain ammonia are not to be sprayed on the stone? What stone will you recommend? Please advise, Thank you.

Dear Jeanne:

There are several stones that are suitable for your project and I can't list them all. A few limestones (and I do mean only a precious few) could fit the bill, and so many marbles, especially if not polished. Several polished marble would do just fine, too. All granites and the majority of mercantile granites are suitable, as well. But a few mercantile granites are not.

So, as you can see, there's no easy answer to a generic question like yours.

Just keep in mind that the most important factor is the way the stone that you eventually end choosing is installed properly. It not, you'll be in a world of hurt no matter what “bestest” stone you have chosen.

Of course, the proper care after the right selection and the the proper installation will be necessary, too; but if something is done wrong with both or even only one of the first two parts of the project, maintenance won't even be an issue anymore.

Should you not trust too much your stone dealer and/or your installer, marblecleaning.org could assist you for a reasonable fee, not a penny of which will ever find its way into the pocket of the expert that will be designated to your cas e, but will exclusively be used to promote marblecleaning.org and its cause.

May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm?

Ciao and good luck,
