Black pearl granite

I've just had a black pearl granite countertop installed. I was told it has been sealed when it probably shouldn't have been. Anyways we left some water glasses and bowls on the counter overnight and the next day after wiping down the countertop and while it was still wet, at certain angles you can see a faint dark circular outline of where the glasses etc. were. Once we wipe the surface dry they disappear. My question is: If the sealer is removed will this solve the problem and if so, what product should I use? And which product(s) should I use for everyday care and maintenance? Thanks for a great web site and all the advice. Rick

Dear Rick:

What you're reporting is what often happens when you apply an impregnator (a.k.a. sealer) to a stone that will not take it in because it is too dense. An invisible film may have been left behind and react “funny” to pH active substances.

My question is: If the sealer is removed will this solve the problem and if so, what product should I use?

It should. However, since you can't do it mechanically (it takes special equipment and skills to do that), doing it chemically involves the use a potent paint stripper based on Methylene Chloride (available at ay paint store). It is nasty stuff and requires that you keep all your windows open. Make sure that you follow all precautionary warnings printed on the container of the product. But that should do it.
