dog urine stains on black marble

HI: CAN YOU PLEASE RECOMMEND HOW I CAN REMOVE DOG URINE STAINS FROM BLACK MARBLE WHICH IS AT THE BASE OF MY GAS FIREPLACE. IT IS LIKE A STEP AND SO HE HAS SEVERAL TIMES LIFTED. I HAVE TRIED MARBLE CLEANERS TO NO AVAIL. THANKS SO MUCH. LINDA

 

Dear Linda:

The urine “stains” that you have are not stains at all: they are rather marks of corrosions (etch marks) that the acidity of the urine (ureic acid) created on your marble on contact. In other words, no matter what they look like, they are surface damages, and as such they must be treated.

There's no product on the marketplace – sealer or what-have-you – that could prevent acid etching from happening. You will need the services of a bona fide stone restoration contractor, who will have to hone and re-finish your stone. You could also consider a good quality Marble Repair Kit. Keep in mind, however, that if the etching is too extensive and/or too severe, the whole tabletop or floor, or whatever will need to be professionally honed before polishing. It will help a great deal though, and if some handy person in your household can use a car buffer, it would increase the performance of the product dramatically.
