Contractor created cloudy surface on uba tuba countertop.

Dear Maurizio, We had an uba tuba countertop installed in our kitchen about 2 years ago. The seam, where two pieces of the stone was very uneven. The stone itself was beautiful and shiny - - until, the installers were called back by the contractor to fix the seam. They cut through the grout and joined the two pieces very nicely - but whatever they did to repair the seam left the area (about 15" on either side) cloudy and dull. They have been called back twice to remedy the situation, but after "cleaning" and polishing unsuccessfully, they claim that there is nothing more they can do. They even stated that it looks the way it is supposed to. They are since out of business. Is there anything we can do to bring this portion of our countertop back to the shine quality of the rest of the countertop?

Dear Sue:

they claim that there is nothing more they can do.

They are right about that: They can't do anything more – that's for sure! And they amply proved that, too! But that doesn't mean that it can't be done.

They are since out of business.

What an amazing surprise!!...

Is there anything we can do to bring this portion of our countertop back to the shine quality of the rest of the countertop?

Of course there is: you have to hire a bona-fide proficient stone restoration contractor that can do that kind of work. It won't be easy, for face polishing granite and “granite” is very difficult and Black “granites” and Ubatuba are among the most difficult to do, but they are out there!
