Statuary versus Carrara

Q. I am installing a new vanity top in the master bathroom and I want marble. I have located pieces of both Carrara and Statuary; I like the appearance of the Statuary the best, but it is twice the cost. Other than cost are there other factors I should consider? What about maintenance issues? I will do my makeup in the bathroom, and have an occasional cup of coffee. Is one stone better than another for any other reason? I would really appreciate any suggestings you can give. Thanks.

A. Your marble will be with you for a very long time, so select the one you'll be happiest with. Both Statuario and Carrara come from the same quarry and are very similar in nature. With either one, you will have to be careful with acidic liquids which will etch the stone. It may need to be sealed with a good quality impregnator. Please download and read our Stone Care Guide

Here are some quick tips for you:
  • Avoid any cleaning products that are not designated safe for stone. We recommend MB Stonecare MB-5. In fact, if you have a mirror over your marble countertop, use the MB-5 to clean it, too. It will do a great job and you don't have to worry about overspray harming your marble.
  • Use a coaster under your coffee cup. If you do have a spill, clean it up immediately.
  • Use a tray to put your cosmetics, perfumes, etc. on if they will be on the counter. Make sure the tray has felt on the feet or bottom.
  • Every once in a while use a little MB Stonecare MB-13 Stone Polish on your countertop. It will give it a bit of a shine and will help protect from fingermarks, smudges, etc.
