Absolute Black Problems

Q.I have an absolute black granite dining room table that is having problems with what I believe is etching. I have contacted the dealer numerous times and they will not do anything about this problem. I have what looks like water rings from drinking glasses all over the granite. Could be from water, cocktails, etc. I am very careful but, I would actually like to use this table without panicing everytime I do so. Do you have any solutions as to how I remove these etching stains and what I can do to prevent them? Thank you so much...
A. Hi- Genuine black absolute is a great stone. It is non- porous and should never be sealed-ever. It is also acid resistant and will only etch from very strong acids such as sulfuric and hydroflouric acids
That being said the issues that you are having may be due to sealer being incorrectly applied. If thats the case then your problem will be solved by just removing the sealer.
Removing the sealer may require the use of solvents such as acetone or a paint stripper containing methylene chloride(very nasty stuff) We like to suggest that you call a bona fide stone refinisher who can handle this type of situation. Thats the good news.
The other issue could be that your stone was doctored at the factory which means it is a grey stone that was dyed black to look like the ab black. The shoe polish(resins/dyes)
they use is acid sensitive and is reacting to what your placing on the table. This is a situation that cant be fixed
by any method we know of. Thats why it is best to call a stone refinisher to get to the bottom of the problem.
You can find one at www.stoneandtilepros.com
If you cant send us an e-mail to mail@stoneshine.com
If you have some acetone handy wipe a small area on the table and see if any black dye comes up or if the sealer comes off. Use gloves and paper towels.Be careful to cover the floor and anything that could be affected by the acetone.
let us know if you have any questions.
