I would like to use onyx in the powder room as a countertop (want to underlight). I know it is liable to scratch and show wear. Other than a sealer, which I understand would provide little protection, can you think of anything I could use to coat or cover the counter and increase its durability?
Dear Melissa:
“

Correction: that it will provide not a single iota of protection whatsoever.
“

Nope.

But if it is a powder room (which typically will have little use), I wouldn't worry too much about it. After all, onyx is only marginally “softer” than your average marble
. Just make sure that no bottle is going to be sitting on its surface (use one of those nice-looking mirror trays with felts under their feet), and that you use the right product to clean it with a good-quality stone spray cleaner like MB-5, and that you “spruce it up” a little bit every now and then with a good stone polish like MB-13.
May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at:

Ciao and good luck,
Mauri
