Granite Counter Top with the wrong finish

We ordered a granite countertop with a honed finish. When they came to deliver it they brought us a polished finish instead. The installer had already ripped out our old counter top and sink and had damaged it in the process. They told us then that in order to change it they would have to come back after Christmas which would leave us with a ripped up kitchen and company coming on Christmas day. We reluctantly accepted it. Is there anything we can down now that the granite is in to get the honed finish that we had requested?

Dear Joseph:

Is there anything we can down now that the granite is in to get the honed finish that we had requested?

Not certainly you, but a proficient stone restoration contractor could, by using diamond pads first, and then finishing the job with a good -quality honing powder, to assure uniformity. The problem will be along the backsplash: considering the hardness of the stone and the consequent aggressiveness of the honing means, it is almost impossible to hone all the way against the backsplash without affecting it, too.

Bear also in mind that, depending on the type of your stone, you will loose depth of color. (The darker it is when polished, the more depth of color you will lose.) With darker stones this will create big maintenance issues in the form of frequent an uncontrollable surface staining. Only the application of a good-quality stone color enhancer like MB-6 instead of a regular impregnating sealer will overcome that.
