stain removal

hello: i have 2' X 3' X 2"-3" sandstone slabs on my porch (on the outside perimeter, on which one can sit) I think it's sandstone and not limestone, as the vinegar did not bubble when applied. The slabs are very porous. There are some wine stains and also dark stains which could be from walnuts (squirrels!). Are bleach or hydrogen peroxide-and elbow grease- the best way to remove them? They really show up (in my mind's eye) because the stone is cream colored. TIA!

Dear Kevin:

Usually, if given enough time, stains on stones set outdoors will go away by themselves if exposed to the weather.

But it you must remove them, due to the reported high-absorbency of the stone I doubt that scrubbing the surface with bleach or hydrogen peroxide will do the trick. They're probably deeply imbedded and will require poulticing.

Of course, you can try scrubbing first and then, if it won't work, you know what to do.

May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm?

Ciao and good luck,

Mauri zio Bertoli
