granite sealer

I purchased a granite and marble sealer that claims to be good for twenty years. Is it safe to use over the installer's sealer. When my counters were installed the tops felt sandy. I could not remove the grains by washing, so I presume they sealed it without washing off the sand first. I used a raqzor to remove theparticles and sealed it with the twentyyear sealer. Any other suggestions. Thanks. Thank you for your open and honest answers.

Dear Lee:

I have no idea of what kind of sandy grits you were able to remove with a razor blade. Heck, I don't even have any idea what kind of granite or “granite” you have and if it even needs to be sealed at all!

So first you do it and then you ask me if it's safe?... J

Well, luckily “safe” is not the issue. The real question is: will that particular impregnator(what you call sealer) work and bind to the impregnator originally applied by the fabricator? And the answer to that question is, I don't have the foggiest idea!

All this assuming, once again, that your stone can take an impregnator in to begin with. An also assuming that you realize that your sealer is not a sealer but an impregnator, and that you did not just paint it on and let dry on the surface of your stone.

Any other suggestions.

Well, actually, being completely ignorant about the nature of your stone and the mysterious sandy grit and came off with a razor blade and the way you may have misinterpreted the sealer thing, I have no suggestion at all! L

So, for lack of better intelligence on your particular matter and just in case, I will give you my usual copy & paste recommendation:

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about routine care from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic! By logging into the Helpful Hints section of our website at:   http://www.mbstone.com/HH_promo/helpful_hints.htm , you will be able to get the short version of our maintenance guidelines at no charge. The full version of it – a 7-page document considered by many as an industry benchmark – is available in pay-per-download format in our Educational Literature section at:   http://www.mbstone.com/literature/literature.htm .

And remember, every single penny of the cost of the literature will be used to support this site and its cause: your cause.

While you are in the “Helpful Hints” section, do spend some time reading all of the interesting FREE articles you'll find in there!

Finally, keep in mind that we need your support to help us helping you!
