Marble Tiles damaged by Fantastic cleaner

My wife used Fantastic on a few black marble tiles. Now the tiles have a glazy-hazy look. Very smooth still, but the gloss damaged. Any thoughts?

Dear Ken:

I don't have thoughts: I know exactly what it is.

You can't use generic cleaning products on natural stone. They are just not formulated in a way not to chemically react with marble.

The pH activity of that product corroded (etched) the surface of the stone. If the tiles are on a floor, I would suggest that you use a user-friendly polishing powder for marble like MB-11. If instead the tiles are installaed on a countertop or wall, then I would go for the entire Marble Repair Kit.

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable. In the case of polished black marble it can't be technically sealed) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about routine care from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic! By logging into the Helpful Hints section of our website at:   http://www.mbstone.com/HH_promo/helpful_hints.htm , you will be able to get the short version of our maintenance guidelines at no charge.
