black honed granite

Q. I had Black honed granite installed on my kitchen counter. The installer used All Natural Stone color enhancer by Black Diamond which has a sealer in it and then applied 511 impregnator/sealer after it dried. We are noticing that the granite looks blotchy and is susceptible to fingerprints, etc. Based on your site we have read that an impregnator sealer should not be added. Is this causing our problems. We would like to add another coat of the enhancer to achieve a darker look. Is this now not possible since the impregnator sealer was added on top? If it is how do we remove that impregnator sealer?

 

A. Dear Tom, Removing an existing impregnator can be difficult and tricky. You may want to call in a pro. However, if you want to do it yourself, I would try the following but be sure to test it in a small area first. Clean the stone with some acetone. (Be sure to wear acetone resistant gloves.) I would wipe it several times. After you have wiped it down completely with acetone, then reapply the color enhancer.
