white stains on a solid marble shower stall

Q. i clean for a lady that just moved into a home with a solid marble large shower and have noticed a white film on the floorand part of the side wall. what can i use to get rid of it and not harm the marble?

A. The white film can be soap scum or it can be mineral deposits from the water.  To find out which it is try the following:

Take a sharp razor blade and lightly scrape an area. Be careful not to scratch the stone. If you get soft shavings chance are it is a soap film. If this is the case you can clean the stone with a soap film remover. (MB Stonecare MB-3 Soap Film Remover)

If you do not get soft shavings, try taking a drop of vinegar and let it sit for one minute and then rinse. If this removes the white film then you have mineral deposits. These are not as easy to remove since you could remove the shine on the stone.  I would highly recommend that you call a pro in this case.

If you do need to call in the services of a pro you can find a qualified one in your area here: www.stoneandtilepros.com/findapro.php.
