Travertine for Kitchen Worktop

Ciao Maurizio, We wanted a granite work surface for our kitchen and picked a granite based on its colour from a box. The company sold us that granite which we now know to be travertine. We left a red wine bottle on the surface for not more than 45 minutes. Now we have a black ring on the surface. Can we do anything about it and should the company have sold us this type of granite for a kitchen work surface?

Dear Alistair:

Let me get this straight: a company sold you a granite countertop and it turns out that instead of granite or “granite” it's travertine… Is that it??!...

If that's the case, WOW!!

Call those people in Small Claim court without any further ado! Just make sure that's really travertine, though!!... J

As for the stain, no matter how well sealed a stone can be, if you leave a wet bottle of red wine sitting on it for 45 minutes or so, it will stain!

Impregnators (a.k.a. sealers) only give you reaction time, not 100% sealing performance. The better the impregnator for the particular stone, the longer the reaction time.

45 minutes border extreme conditions in my book.

But relax, removing that stain is no big deal.

When it comes to stain removal, either you buy one of those expensive “Professional kits” (that no true professional ever uses!) at a stone retailer near you, or you can spend less money and get our comprehensive guidelines on how to remove stains by using inexpensive and far more effective means that you may already have in your household! Such impressive piece of literature will also tell you how to tell stains apart from “stains”, and what to do about the latter! It does carry a small price tag, and you can order it by logging on at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/literature.htm.   It's available in pay-per-download format and it's much cheaper than any kit on the market! Not to mention the little and much needed support you'd be giving to the cause – your cause - since every single penny of the cost of the article will be used to support it.

Also, will you please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose by logging on at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm? By spreading the word about this valuable site among your friend & family and the stone trades' people you've been dealing with, you will be rendering everybody a valuable service!

Ciao and good luck,

Mauri z io Bertoli
