Staining a Slate Table

I recently purchased a cheap slate topped end table and I want to change the color of the slabs of slate on the table face. Someone suggested staining the slate? They are a grey/ yellow/ brown color now. I want them to all be shades of brown. Any ideas? Get some random stain and a paint brush and go to town? help?

Dear Nichole:

Boy, it must be an epidemic or somethin'!... This is the third time this week that someone comes up with the plan of staining stone!

Tell the genius who suggested you such an absurd idea to keep his or her mouth shut when they don't know what they're talking about!

Ciao and good luck,

Maurizio Bertoli
