Green Uba Tuba

Hi Maurizio, The quaetion is, we just had green uba tuba counter tops installed but there are pits and small chips all over it. Is this normal for the stone? Thanks Al

 

Dear Al:

I must ask you to realize that different people see things differently. Some individuals look at a piece of granite after it's been installed in their homes and all of a sudden “discover” those little pits that are all over the surface of the stone. All true granites and most mercantile granites have natural little pits throughout their texture, but to some they are either not acceptable or “excessive”. Of course, if I could actually see your stone I would be able to tell you if your pits are within standards, but without seeing it I don't want to go on record saying that your pits are not “normal”; maybe you're just overreacting.

Or maybe not…

After all, charnockite (that's what Ubatuba is) has a very limited number and size pitting, and should not have any chip. But then again, don't take this statement as the gospel.

If you want to make sure, you're best course of action is to consult with a reputable stone restoration contractor in your area.

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable – which in the cas e of Ubatuba seldom is) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about routine care from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic!
