travetine in a shower

hi Maurizio we are having a shower enclosure and bathroom, our architect says we need to fix this onto ply in the shower area and the plumbers say it is ok to go on plasterboard with a coat of water resistant sealant, who is right or are both ok, would value your opinion as i am out of my depth here thanks

Dear Chris:

What do you mean by, “ply”?... Plywood?? If so your architect should be committed!!

And so should your plumber if for plaster board you mean regular green board, a.k.a. sheet rock!

The only board you can consider is cement board, such as Duro-rock and the likes.

And make sure that they leave a 1/16' grout gap in between tiles and that they keep the grout a bit on the thick side and push it in deep in between the tiles with a putty knife or something similar.

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is far more important than the sealing itself and it's all too often neglected.
