Santa Cecilia countertop

I recently had a Santa Cecelia countertop installed and the installer said the counter came with a factory sealer but I should reseal again. He also said to seal once a year. He suggested a sealer at a Hobo store in our area and I was unable to find it. I then bought a sealer at our local Home Depot. It is made by Stone Care International. After applying this product I have what looks like water marks. I then decided to follow up with their polish. If I really buff with a cloth they seem to kind of come off but it is very difficult. Can I get them off any other way or use some sort of power buffer to polish? what product would you suggest for this type of counter?

Dear Diane:

If the fabricator said that the slab had been sealed by the factory it only means that the slab had been resined, which is very common with that particular type of stone and it is overall a good thing. Among other things, such process produces a permanent (and I mean permanent – like in forever) sealing of the stone. Therefore, not only will you not need to apply an impregnator once a year, but you should have never applied one in the first place. The “staining” that you're experiencing is most likely the consequence of the non-appropriate application of the product (maybe you did not remove thoroughly the residue of the product from the surface of the stone).

Be that is it may, either you get some advice from the maker of the product, or – better yet – you get hold of a reputable stone restoration contractor in your area. You do not want to take chances with a DIY approach to something that, obviously, you're not familiar with.

Once the problem will be taken care off, remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is far more important than the sealing itself and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about it from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic!
