Bathroom Travertine Tiles (6x6)

I recently installed hone-finish unfilled travertine tiles (6x6) on my bathroom floors. I used 3/16" spacers. From what I understand, my next step would be to fill the porous holes with a un-sanded grout (or another product?) before grouting my lines with the sanded grout. After I use the unsanded grout over the tiles, how long should I wait to grout my lines? Also, what are your recommendations for sealing (before grouting, after grouting, time frame?) I have heard instances of urine stanes on travertine around the toilet, and I want to avoid this at all costs. What are your recommendations? - THANKS!!

Dear Nick:

I have heard instances of urine stains on travertine around the toilet, and I want to avoid this at all costs. What are your recommendations?

If you're so concerned about that, then my recommendation is that you don't install natural stone in your bathroom. No matter how much you will seal them, if you leave some liquid sitting on those tiles long enough, it will go in – period. Sealers for stone only give you ample reaction time, never 100% sealing performance.

I reckon that it is pointless talking about all the rest now.

Ciao and good luck,

Maurizio Bertoli
