scratches on granite

We have black granite (butterfly)on our countertops and backsplashes, which is about 5 yrs old. My question: "Is there a product I could apply to remove some minor surface scratches, or do I have to hire a professional? Also, how do I avoid scratching it in the future?" Thank you so much for being there! Joanne

Dear Joanne:

Is there a product I could apply to remove some minor surface scratches, or do I have to hire a professional?

That's a tricky question that brings everything down to individuals' personal standards. Technically, you can't apply any product to make those scratches disappear (you may want to try with a fine point permanent black magic marker, but don't hold your breath and don't expect it to last for a very long time), and therefore the hiring of a bona fide stone restoration contractor is your only option – assuming that you can find one good enough to tackle a job like that in your neck of the woods.

However, you're talking about “minor surface scratches”… I know that my wife (and I) would learn how to live with those quite nicely and pay them no never mind, even if I could easily fix them myself! J

But, hey, everybody's different, I reckon!... J

This is not to criticize you and your feelings about a few minor scratches: it is mostly to prepare you for the possible “worst”: chances are very good that you won't be able to find anybody who can do the job on a very difficult stone like that.

May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm?

Ciao and good luck,
