soap stone

we have green soapstone counters which we have been mineral oiling for four years and yet about a week after the oiling, they always turn back to a light grey-green which has none of the richness of the recently oiled stone or other soapstone countertops we have seen. Any suggestions? How about a coat of polyurethane? Blasphemy?

Dear Mary:

How about a coat of polyurethane? Blasphemy?

Oh it's blasphemy, alright, and big time, too! You should go through confession just for having thought of that!!! J

Besides, urethane wouldn't even stick to soapstone!

Any suggestions?

Yes, deep clean your stone with acetone (available at any hardware store) two and three times, and then apply to your stone a good-quality stone color enhancer non-sensitive to acidic substances, like MB-6.

That will give you the darker look that mineral oil provides but in a more permanent way. Probably a couple of years or better, depending on traffic conditions and routine care implemented on it.

May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm?

Ciao and good luck,
