Stone Counters Outdoors

Approximately one month ago we had Peacock Green stone counters installed in an uncovered outdor kitchen. The stone was not sealed. The stone seems to have lost some of its shine and the definition between the different quartz components that makes up the stone is more pronounced. During that month we've had rain nearly every other day. I can live with the look of the stone but was wondering if a color enhancer or sealer might bring back the shine without muting the colors too much. If this would work does it have to be re-applied periodically.

Dear Tim:

Two things:

Verde Peacock is too dense a stone (charnockite) to absorb any impregnating/sealer/color-enhancer.

Second, stone is not polished by slapping some sealer on it, but by abrasion and friction, like gemstone.

Charnockite is not the kind of stone that should be installed outdoors and expect that it will remain like brand-new forever. Granite and many other “granites” are suitable; charnockite is not.

The weather will eventually exact its toll and there's nothing that you can technically do about it.

Your best bet is to apply periodically a good-quality paste car wax to your stone.
