Honed Thassos Marble Absorbing Grout

Dear Maurizio, I have installed honed thassos mosaic tiles in my bathroom and have sealed them with 3 coats. They are absorbing the white grout I am using and finishing with a powdery look instead of a clean finish. Is there something else I should be doing or a different grout I should be using? Basically the face of the tile is absorbing the grout slightly. What can i do? Thank you so much.

Dear Amy:

I have installed honed Thassos mosaic tiles in my bathroom and have sealed them with 3 coats

Only 3 coats?... I would have sealed them with at least 127 coats!!

Let me guess: since you're talking about coats, you didn't remove the residue of the sealer off of the surface of the stone after you (pretended to) seal it, did you?

That's what I thought! Why bother reading the back label in a bottle, right?!...

Your stone is not absorbing any grout! The problem is that the grout is sticking to the impregnator (a.k.a. sealer) that you did not remove and that had no business being there to begin with.

What to do?

You? Not much, I'm afraid.

Only a professional stone restoration contractor could solve the problem by professionally re-honing your entire mosaic with the right equipment and a good-quality stone honing powder.

May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm?

Ciao and good luck,
