Marble and Granite flooring

Hi I have just started leasing a commercial building that has a granite and marble floor in the lobby. The building was built about 1930. I have spent a good bit of time scrubibg the floor to get the accumulated wax off it. The floor seems to be granite in the center with a border of marble surrounding the granite. the border has a little bit of shine to it, while the granite does not. Is this normal? or would the floor have been highly polished. I do not know what type of granite is on the floor, but i can say that it looke just like the floor in the old Wanamaker store, now a Macys in Philadelphia. I am not sure if i should just leave it alone or have it polished. Also what can i use to remove some of the wax that is left on the floor? thanks Mike in New Jersey

In the 30s there were not granite or marble tiles. All stone floors were installed with the so-called grind-in place method and were delivered with a hone-finish (smooth and scratch-free, but no shine).

Since you're in NJ I'd really love to take a look at that floor!... (I mean it!) Just keep in mind that starting tomorrow I'll be out of state and will be back after thanksgiving.

At any rate, whether you want to have it polished or left in its original state is totally up to you.

As for the wax sitting on it, a good-quality wax stripper should do the job.
