granite shield

What do you think of the product called granite shield. I saw a side by side video versus home depots 15 yr warrantied sealant, the granite shield appeared to be better. It is supposed to work on glass also, so stone absorption wouldnt be a factor. I don't know what to think about it, thought i would ask you.

Dear Dan:

Since you appear to care about my opinion, without going into lengthy details, my summation about that scam is that's just that… a scam.

I looked deep and large into it and their claims, and so did quite a few reputable professionals, and there's very little truth to any of their claims. The fact that the claim that they seal glass and stainless steel too, speak volumes right there! (I mean who needs to seal glass and stainless steel??) On the other hand, I consider a scam the HP 15-year sealing thing, too. Read their warranty and, no matter how you slice it, it is Swiss cheese.

I'm old enough not to believe in miracles, Dan. I make probably the best stone sealer on the planet (MB-4), whose performance exceeds both GS and the HD stuff, but you will never see me getting into the bandwagon of the money-maker “sealing cult”.

For some reason I still believe that stone intelligence is what people need, opposed to a solution in a bottle that in most cases is not a solution at all, and that – stone intelligence – is what I'm trying to do my best to deliver.

How about understanding what stone you're going to buy, instead of these vague and totally mislabeled “granite” things?

Don't you think it would be more important to learn that so that one could find out if the stone can be sealed at all to begin with, and if it does, how to handle the sealing job without getting mislead by snake-oil salesmanship?

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about routine care from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic!
