surface scratches in granite

Hi, just bought a new built home w/ blue pearl granite countertops and I've noticed some fine scratches on the surface. They are visible in the light & seem whitish. They don't appear to be below the surface, but can just be felt w/ a fingernail. How can I fix them? Is there a polish, wax or steel wool treatment for this w/o damaging them?

Dear Jodi:

Although Blue Pearl is not among the hardest mercantile granite out there, it's still pretty darn hard!

Stone is polished mechanically, by abrasion and friction, like gemstone; the scratches that you have are in the stone, not on some sort of finish.

Conclusion: only a proficient professional stone restoration contractor can fix that by slightly grinding (honing) the surface of the stone and then polishing it up to blend with the rest. However, if the scratching is extensive, they could be repaired only in a shop equipped with a bed-polisher.

No matter what, the fabricator/installer is fully responsible for your scratches and you don't have to accept the installation the way it is.
