Travertine in a steam room

Hi Maurizio, I'm building a commercial steam room in my new day spa. I'd like to know if and what type of travertine stone would be best in that environment as the steam will be on throughout the day, 5 days a week, 40 hours a week. Should I use a different material or do you think the travertine hold up without allowing the steam to escape and create a mold problem? Will it be okay to use everywhere....the ceiling, the walls, and the floor? I need help!! I would appreciate any feedback and other recommendations that you may have. Thank you so much for your stone wisdom!

Dear Demi:

Usually a good-quality travertine, like the true Travertino Romano or the Mexican Durango (the tan colored one) are stones that works great in wet environment, if installed properly.

In your case, however, you're pushing the envelope to an extreme that takes the whole issue into uncharted territory. My gut feeing tells me that's going to be okay – but it is just that: gut feeling. I can't do any better than that under the circumstances. And again, the installation is paramount!! Even more than the stone itself.

May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm?

Ciao and good luck,
