unfilled, chiseled travertine in a random pattern

I want to install the above in my basement in Atlanta, GA. I like the rugged character and am okay with additional aging. My concern is with the holes and whether mold or bacteria can grow in them and smell? I thought I would vacuum weekly. Am I crazy because everyone looks at me like I am!

 

Dear Sandy:

If you apply a water-proofing membrane to your sub floor before installation, you should have any problem with leaving the holes of the stone open. They need to be filled in environments where you handle flood (kitchen) or where there's a lot of humidity involved (shower stall). Other than that, you can leave them open with no problem.
